The proposed experiment to allow cycling along Queen Street between 4pm and 10am is to go ahead, it was reported at the last meeting of the Cycling Development and Liaison Working Party. Approval was given by the council executive in April. The two year experiment could start this Autumn, or may be delayed to Spring 2008, depending on the legal process that still has to be completed.
The experiment is controversial, with many people opposed to allowing cycling in Queen Street at all. Others are unhappy with the way the experiment has been formulated. Whatever the rights and wrongs are, there is a clear need for an east west cycle route across Cardiff City Centre in this area and we as cyclists should do what we can to make it succeed. Cardiff Cycling Campaign has formally supported the experiment, though with some caveats.
The experiment is based on a similar one in Cambridge – that has recently been deemed successful, let us hope that the same will happen in Cardiff.
