Graduates’ bike loan plan could end bicycle thefts
Posted on Thursday, June 28 @ 19:00:42 BST by max.wallis

CARDIFF could soon resemble the bicycle-thronged streets of Amsterdam thanks to an innovative and ethical business idea dreamed up by the city’s students, says a report by Cathryn Scott, in Western Mail of 18th June 2007

Bike theft among the student population could also be a thing of the past thanks to the new business venture of two recent graduates.

Hundreds of bicycles are stolen from students in Wales every academic year – with 300 reports of theft annually in Cardiff alone. The density of bikes in student living areas, and the fact that many aren’t adequately secured, make them an easy target for thieves.

But a scheme that will lend bicycles to students in Cardiff free of charge looks set to change that when it is implemented at the start of the next academic year in September.
Uni-Cycles Ltd, run by Daniel Jones and James Paton, who both graduated from Cardiff University with degrees in business last summer, hopes to deter thieves with its distinctive rental bicycles.

It means students won’t have to bring their own often expensive bikes to college with them – and firms will bring in revenue by advertising in the highly-visible bike frames.

Students will also pay a refundable deposit of £20 to hire a bicycle for the academic year, and provided it is returned safely, they will receive a £30 bonus at the end of the year.
